When to replace a connecting rod?

A connecting rod is usually damaged due to bearing seizure (big end overheating – turning purple) or hydrolock (bent shaft). We offer new KMP Brand connecting rods which are:

  • Forged: Much more resistant to tensile stress than cast rods.
  • Dimensionally checked: Perfect alignment of the big end and small end (no risk of piston misalignment).
  • Complete: Supplied with installed pin bush, conrod bolts, and nuts.

Conrod Types (Serrated vs Flat)

In Perkins (1000/1100 series) and CAT (3054) engines, there are two types of mating surfaces between the rod and the cap:

  • Serrated joint: Characterized by teeth on the mating surface.
  • Flat joint: Smooth mating surface.

These types are not interchangeable! Check your old rod before purchasing.

💡 Replacing a connecting rod?

You will need new big end bearings and potentially a piston (if the old one was damaged). Check:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I replace just one connecting rod?

Theoretically yes, provided the new rod has the same weight as the others (weight group). KMP Brand rods are manufactured to tight weight tolerances, facilitating such replacement, but we recommend checking the weight before installation.

What is a small end bush?

It is a brass or bronze bushing pressed into the top of the connecting rod, where the piston pin works. Over time, it wears out (becomes oval), causing knocking. We offer replacement bushes for refurbishment.

Rod thrown through the block?

If the engine block is damaged, check our offer for blocks or complete engines.
