How to choose head gasket thickness?

Engine manufacturers (Perkins, JCB) use gaskets of various thicknesses to compensate for piston protrusion above the engine block. They are distinguished by the number of notches or holes on the gasket edge:

  • Selection by old gasket: If you haven't skimmed the block or changed pistons, install a gasket with the same number of notches.
  • Selection after rebuild: If you skimmed the block, you must measure piston protrusion and select a thicker gasket according to the manufacturer's table.

MLS vs Composite Technology

In modern engines (e.g., Perkins 1104, JCB Dieselmax), MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) gaskets are standard. They consist of several layers of spring steel, ensuring resistance to high combustion pressures in Turbo engines. Older units (e.g., Perkins 4.236) use composite (soft) gaskets with metal reinforcement.

Should I apply silicone to an MLS gasket?

Absolutely NOT. KMP Brand and Perkins gaskets have a factory sealing coating. Adding silicone or grease will interfere with its function and lead to gasket failure.

Is the Perkins and JCB gasket the same?

Many JCB engines are Perkins designs, but the JCB Dieselmax engine is a different design. Gaskets differ in water and oil passages. Always check the engine code (e.g., RE, RG vs SA, SB).

Can't see notches on the old gasket?

Sometimes corrosion or damage makes identification impossible. Contact us – we will help select the gasket based on piston protrusion measurement.
