FLYWHEEL / CROWN

Flywheel Ring Gear – Common Failure

Grinding noise during startup is a symptom of worn teeth on the ring gear. The ring gear engages with the starter bendix. We offer KMP Brand and Azeri Parts ring gears made from high-grade steel, with induction-hardened teeth for extended life.

Flywheels and Hubs

In JCB Dieselmax engines, the flywheel is a massive component, often mounted via an intermediate hub. We stock:

  • Complete flywheels (castings).
  • Flywheel hubs (connecting crankshaft to flywheel).
  • Mounting bolts (must be replaced every time the flywheel is removed!).

💡 Replacing the ring gear?

If the ring gear teeth are damaged, check the starter motor. A faulty bendix will destroy a new ring gear in days.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How to install a new ring gear?

The ring gear is shrink-fitted. Heat it evenly (e.g., with a torch or oven) to approx. 200-250°C, then place it on the cold flywheel. It will tighten permanently as it cools. Remember the chamfer on the teeth – it must face the starter!

Can flywheel bolts be reused?

No. These are stretch bolts working under high load. Reusing them risks snapping and catastrophic damage to the engine and clutch/converter.

Unsure about the ring gear?

Perkins engines used ring gears with different tooth counts (e.g., 115T vs 126T) depending on the starter used. Count the teeth before buying.
