The pin should slide in without the use of excessive force; driving it in with a hammer may indicate deformation of the carriage or the forks themselves. Always verify the technical condition of the mating safety cotter pin – its absence or wear can lead to spontaneous sliding out of the pin and uncontrolled movement of the forks under load.
