Workshop Technical Tip: Symptoms of a worn centre joint include knocking or clicking on take-off and during turns under load, play felt when moving the driveshaft by hand, and vibration during travel. Worn (oval) U-joint cap bores in the yoke are the most common failure mode - once the bores are oval, continued operation destroys the U-joint and the driveshaft itself. When replacing the yoke, always renew the U-joint (30.2 x 82 mm) at the same time. Pack the U-joint needle-roller bearings with the correct joint grease before assembly. Check the condition of the U-joint seals - these protect the bearings from water and mud ingress, which is the primary cause of premature corrosion and wear.
