Workshop Technical Tip: Replacing the front crankshaft seal requires removing the crankshaft pulley (and often the belt and timing covers). Before fitting, thoroughly clean the seal housing and the crankshaft journal - scratches or pitting on the journal will cause the new seal to leak. If a worn groove from the old lip is visible on the journal, consider offsetting the new seal by a fraction of a millimetre (if the design allows) or using a repair sleeve. Press the new seal in evenly and squarely with a suitable installer - a skewed seal will leak. Lubricate the lip with clean oil before fitting and take care not to fold it. Also check that the crankcase breather is clear - excess pressure pushes seals out.
