Operating with a clogged filter forces the internal bypass valve to open, allowing dirty, unfiltered oil to circulate and rapidly damage engine bearings and turbochargers. During installation, always remember to lubricate the rubber sealing gasket with a thin layer of clean engine oil and tighten the filter according to the manufacturer's specifications (usually hand-tight plus a specified fraction of a turn) to ensure a proper seal without damaging the thread.
