Workshop Tip: Delaying the replacement of worn arm link bushings leads to the so-called housing wear (bore distortion). When the bushing wears down too much, the pin begins to strike directly against the arm structure, causing ovalization of the steel mounting bore. In such cases, a simple bushing replacement is no longer enough, and costly line boring and welding of the arm become necessary.
Golden rules for bushing installation:
1. Always replace in pairs with the pin: Installing a new bushing onto an old, worn pin (which already has material loss or necking) will drastically shorten the lifespan of the new bushing. Always verify the condition of the mating 45 mm diameter pin.
2. Pressing or freezing: Bushings with a hardness of up to 62 HRC are prone to surface cracks if mechanical installation is handled improperly. The best method is pressing the bushing in using a hydraulic press (screw puller) or pre-cooling it in dry ice (thermal contraction), which allows for a smooth installation into the arm housing.
3. Initial lubrication: Before installing the pin, thoroughly clean the internal lubrication groove of the bushing and fill it with fresh lithium-calcium grease enriched with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). Remember regular maintenance – proper lubrication creates a protective film that repels water and dirt, extending the joint's lifespan by several hundred operating hours.
