Workshop Technical Tip: A worn axle shaft U-joint typically shows up as a characteristic jerk or vibration on take-off, a dull knock when changing direction, or under high torque transfer (e.g. climbing a gradient under load). When replacing the U-joint, always inspect the needle roller bearing cups and seals — corroded or pitted cups mean the entire half shaft assembly should be renewed. Fit the new U-joint to the correct torque specification on the retaining clips. After assembly, grease through the nipples (where fitted) with fresh grease before returning the machine to work.
