Workshop Tip: In telehandlers, the steering system (especially in "crab" steering or four-wheel steering modes) is subjected to gigantic loads. Even the smallest play on the pins translates into uncontrolled wandering of the machine, delayed steering response, and accelerated, "cupped" tire wear.
Golden rules for tie rod replacement:
1. Alignment adjustment (toe-in/toe-out): This is an absolute priority. Replacing a tie rod on any machine requires remeasuring and adjusting the wheel alignment. Attempting to adjust it "by eye" or "by thread count" always ends in tire damage and strain on the drivetrain.
2. Proper cone installation: The steering knuckle sockets must be perfectly clean before inserting new studs. Remember to only use a torque wrench to tighten the castle nuts, not an impact wrench, which can damage the thread and the inside of the joint.
3. Securing the mechanism: Do not forget to use securing cotter pins on the stud castle nuts. The jam nuts on the tie rod pipe itself must also be securely tightened to prevent the length from misadjusting due to vibrations.
