Workshop Technical Advice: The installation of a needle bearing requires absolute cleanliness. Before seating the new bearing, carefully verify the condition of the mating surface on the countershaft. Any tarnishing, pitting, material flaking, or grooves carved by the old needles disqualify the shaft from further use (the new bearing will be destroyed in a very short time on a damaged raceway). To press the bearing into the housing, use only appropriate presses and flat sleeves so as not to damage the delicate cage. Remember to generously lubricate the needles with fresh gear oil before the final assembly of the transmission.
