Workshop Technical Tip: The cold start solenoid is fitted directly to the injection pump — before replacement, switch off the ignition and ensure fuel system pressure has been relieved. Symptoms of a faulty solenoid include: difficulty starting in cold weather, black smoke on start-up (enrichment not activating), or excessive smoke and fuel consumption when the engine is warm (solenoid stuck in the active position). When removing, always use the correct size spanner — the fitting nut is typically torqued tightly from the factory and is easily damaged with the wrong tool. After replacement, check the connection for fuel leaks and test-start the engine in varying temperature conditions.
