Workshop Technical Tip: Replacing the rear crankshaft seal requires removing the gearbox and flywheel - a labour-intensive job, so it is worth checking the clutch and release bearing condition at the same time. Before fitting, thoroughly clean the seal housing and the crankshaft journal - scratches or pitting on the journal will cause the new seal to leak. Press the new seal in evenly and squarely using a suitable installer (never tap on one point) - a skewed seal will leak. Lubricate the sealing lip with clean engine oil before fitting and take care not to fold the lip as it slides onto the shaft. Also check that the crankcase breather is clear - excess crankcase pressure pushes seals out.
