Workshop Tip: Over the years and under the influence of temperature and oil chemistry, rubber hoses harden, perish, and lose their flexibility. This can result in micro-cracks and unmetered air being sucked into the system.
Golden rules for suction hose replacement:
1. Hose clamp verification: Always use new, wide hose clamps (GBS type, reinforced). Old, deformed worm drive clamps can cut the new hose or fail to provide a complete seal, allowing outside air to be sucked in and the oil to foam.
2. Stub cleanliness: Before slipping on the new hose, thoroughly clean the stubs on the pump and tank from remnants of old rubber and dirt. The stubs can be lightly lubricated with clean hydraulic oil, which will make it easier to slip the tight hose on without damaging it.
3. Hose routing: Ensure that the new hose is routed naturally, without kinks, twists around its own axis, or rubbing against sharp edges of the machine frame. A kinked hose drastically reduces its working flow capacity.
