Workshop Tip: Damage or wear to this O-ring carries significant risk. In the case of the sideshift lock (popularly known as the carriage clamp on JCB machines), a leak causes a slow drop in locking pressure – as a result, the boom can spontaneously drift sideways during digging operations. In wheeled loaders (400 series), a pressure drop in the quick hitch prevents stable and secure locking of the bucket or forks.
Before installing the new O-ring, thoroughly clean the mounting groove of any old seal remnants, carbon buildup, and rust. To prevent the rubber edges from getting sheared by sharp threads or housing rims when sliding the plunger in, generously lubricate the O-ring with fresh hydraulic oil or a dedicated silicone grease.
