Workshop Tip: Ignoring play in the swing cylinders is a straight path to a serious breakdown. The play causes the cylinder to perform micro-bending movements instead of working smoothly along its axis. This results in the rapid destruction of the seal packs in the cylinder gland, oil leaks, and in extreme cases, can lead to bending or cracking of the piston rod.
Golden rules for swing cylinder bushing installation:
1. Always verify the pin: Installing a new AM bushing onto an old, worn pin (with a nominal diameter of 64.5 mm) that already has scratches or necking is counterproductive. Uneven pressure will cause the new bushing to wear out at an accelerated rate.
2. Pressing without direct impact: Steel hardened to 62 HRC has a very hard surface layer that can chip (danger of injury!) or micro-crack under a direct strike from a steel hammer. The bushing should be pressed in using a screw puller/hydraulic press or by utilizing a soft metal drift (brass, copper). Pre-freezing the bushing to induce thermal contraction also works perfectly.
3. Proper initial lubrication: Before assembling the pin, generously fill the internal lubrication grooves with high-quality lithium-calcium grease enriched with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) or graphite grease. Regular pressurized lubrication of the swing system effectively flushes out water and contaminants, drastically extending the trouble-free operating time.
