Workshop Technical Tip: The pinion shaft flange yoke operates under high torsional and impact stresses — especially during rapid acceleration and braking under heavy fork loads. Regularly check for axial and radial play in the pinion shaft: excessive play produces a characteristic metallic knock on take-off and can damage the pinion seal housing, ultimately leading to axle oil leaks. When replacing the flange yoke, always inspect the pinion shaft oil seal and taper roller bearings at the same time — replace them simultaneously to avoid repeat disassembly. After reassembly, set the pinion bearing preload to manufacturer specification and refill the axle with the correct oil grade approved for wet brake axles.
