Workshop Tip: A damaged or leaking feed pump/separator most often manifests as problems with morning machine starts, sudden power drops under load, and air entering the fuel system. Too much contamination can damage the check valves inside the manual hand pump.
Golden rules for primer pump with separator replacement:
1. Maintain absolute cleanliness: When removing old fuel lines and installing the new pump, ensure the fittings are sterile and clean. Even the smallest grain of sand that gets past the filter can damage the injectors.
2. Priming the filter with fuel: If you are replacing the fuel filter along with the pump (which is highly recommended), fill the new cartridge to the brim with clean diesel fuel before tightening it. This will greatly facilitate and speed up the bleeding process.
3. Proper bleeding: After assembling everything, gently loosen the bleed screw (usually at the very top of the housing) and press the manual primer pump repeatedly until clean fuel without air bubbles starts flowing from under the screw. Then tighten the screw and try to start the machine. Be careful not to strip the threads on plastic components!
