Workshop Technical Tip: A worn front idler shows up as uneven track tread wear, visible lateral track deviation during travel, excessive undercarriage noise and loss of track tension despite a correctly functioning hydraulic adjuster. When replacing the idler, always check the side seal condition — a leaking seal allows grease to escape from the idler shaft journals, leading to rapid internal bearing failure. Set track tension to the service manual specification — both an under-tensioned and over-tensioned track dramatically shortens the service life of the entire undercarriage. For a full undercarriage overhaul, replace the front idler together with the carrier rollers and bottom rollers at the same time.
