How do Hydraclamps work?

In JCB machines, the rear boom slides along the frame (Kingpost). To dig effectively, the boom must be locked in position. This is done by 4 hydraclamps (pots), which clamp onto the frame rails under hydraulic pressure. Releasing the lock (pressing the side-shift button) drops the pressure and allows movement.

Common Faults and Solutions

  • Oil leak / Boom moves by itself: Worn piston seals inside the hydraclamp housing. We offer Azeri Parts repair kits resistant to high pressure.
  • Cannot unlock (slide) the boom: Often caused by a burnt solenoid coil (responsible for pressure release) or a stuck valve in the block.
  • Cracked housing: Occurs due to mechanical impact. We stock complete, new cast iron housings.

How many hydraclamps are on a machine?

A standard JCB 3CX/4CX backhoe has 4 hydraclamps (2 upper and 2 lower). It is recommended to service them as a set.

Can I use a coil from another function?

Not always. Coils differ in voltage and stem dimensions. We stock dedicated side-shift lock coils (often with a specific plug).
