Workshop Tip: During a general overhaul or resealing of a JCB gearbox, absolute verification of the clutch pack height is the key to success. Spacer plates with a thickness of 1.20 mm are used for precise positioning and eliminating the play that occurs as a result of natural wear of the friction discs.
Golden rules for clutch basket assembly:
1. Inspect tooth wear: During every repair, carefully examine the spline (57 teeth) of the plate and the mating grooves in the basket. Any indentations or sharp edges can cause the plates to bind, which will prevent smooth disengagement of the drive.
2. Axial clearance adjustment: Assemble the basket with a new pack of friction discs and use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance under the retaining ring (circlip). If the clearance is too large, the gearbox will generate violent shocks when engaging a gear, which will shorten the life of shafts and gears. If the clearance is too tight, the discs will constantly rub against each other, leading to their immediate burn-out.
3. Proper lubrication: Before finally closing the gearbox housing, make sure that the entire system is filled with clean, dedicated transmission fluid recommended by JCB (such as JCB Transmission Fluid or an equivalent meeting the OEM standards).
