Workshop Tip: Leaks from the rear crankshaft seal are often mistaken for a leaking oil pan or gearbox. Ignoring a leak in this area on machines with a friction clutch will very quickly lead to oil contamination and slipping of the clutch disc, forcing an immediate, expensive disassembly of the entire drivetrain (splitting the machine).

Golden rules for seal replacement:
1. Shaft surface verification: Before installing a new seal, absolutely check the condition of the crankshaft journal. Deep grooves left by the old sealing lip will cause the new part to start leaking oil quickly. In such a case, it may be necessary to use a repair seal with an offset lip or a special repair sleeve (Speedi-Sleeve).
2. Cleanliness is key: The seat in the block/housing must be perfectly clean and degreased. Be careful not to scratch the aluminum surfaces of the housing during cleaning.
3. Proper installation method: Pay attention to the seal material. Traditional seals (NBR, FKM) should be slightly moistened with clean oil on the lip before installation. However, modern Teflon (PTFE) seals are always installed on an absolutely dry and clean shaft (they usually require waiting a few hours before the engine is started for the first time, so that the lip can properly seat and tighten on the shaft). Use dedicated tools (installation sleeves) to drive the seal perfectly axially – misalignment guarantees another leak.
