Workshop Tip: The boom cylinder in medium and heavy-class excavators (such as the popular JS 200 or JS 220 series) constantly supports the immense mass of the arm and payload. An internal leak on the 125 mm piston is the direct cause of irritating arm "drifting" downwards. During seal replacement, thoroughly inspect the condition of the chrome plating on the 85 mm piston rod. The slightest corrosion pitting or longitudinal scratches will instantly destroy the rod seal, causing a recurring leak. Before installing new Teflon (PTFE) seals onto the piston, it is recommended to gently warm them in clean, warm hydraulic oil. This will make them more flexible, preventing accidental cracking during stretching and facilitating correct seating in the piston grooves.
