Workshop Tip: Although guide rings are not directly responsible for stopping oil leaks, their condition is of fundamental importance for the lifespan of the entire cylinder. A worn, eroded, or damaged 70 mm guide ring causes the piston to slightly tilt inside the cylinder under load. This results in uneven pressure on the main pressure seals, which drastically accelerates their wear and leads to premature leakage.
Workshop Rule: During every cylinder overhaul, absolutely replace the guide rings with new components. Before installation, thoroughly clean the groove in the piston or gland from metal micro-shavings and old sludge. If the old ring shows signs of deeply embedded metal shavings, it means the inside of the cylinder might have been scratched – before assembling the cylinder, make sure to inspect the surface of the cylinder tube!
