Workshop Tip: Wet braking systems in JCB machines are highly durable but require strict adherence to service procedures. The most common cause of premature friction disc wear is using the wrong oil in drive axles or ignoring oil change intervals. Degraded oil loses its friction-modifying properties, leading to vibrations (chatter), overheating of the friction lining, and eventually burning (glazing).
Golden rules for replacement:
1. Always replace the complete set of friction discs and their counter-acting steel (pressure) plates on a given axle. Replacing only individual, most worn discs will cause uneven pressure distribution and rapid destruction of the newly installed elements.
2. Before installing new discs, absolutely soak them for at least a few hours in clean oil – the same type that you will ultimately pour into the axle. Installing completely "dry" discs can lead to immediate burning during the first heavy braking.
3. To fill the axle, use only dedicated UTTO oils with specifications adjusted for wet brakes (e.g., JCB HP Gear Oil or other high-grade fluids containing specialized Limited Slip - LS friction modifiers).
