Technical Advice: Checking the axial play on the steering knuckle pins must be carried out with the axle unloaded. The desired play value after adding shims is specified in the service manual for a given axle type (usually in the range of 0.1 - 0.2 mm). Lack of correction of the increasing play results in accelerated wear of the pin bearings, damage to the pins themselves, destruction of the steering knuckle spherical seals, and in critical cases leads to cracking of the cast iron steering knuckle housing or the axle tube.
