Workshop Tip: A cylinder leak is often just a symptom of a deeper problem. Before installing new seals, carefully verify the condition of the remaining hydraulic components.
Golden rules for hydraulic cylinder regeneration:
1. Rod surface evaluation: Before installing the seal pack, carefully inspect the chrome rod under strong light. Even minor scratches that can be felt with a fingernail, corrosion pitting, or impacts will cause the new seals to be destroyed after just a few hours of operation.
2. Absolute cleanliness (sterility): Perform the regeneration on a clean workbench. Use lint-free wipes. Wash the components in special cleaners. One grain of quartz in the system is a death sentence for the control valve and hydraulic pump.
3. Careful seal installation: Avoid using sharp tools (e.g., screwdrivers) to press in polyurethane seals. Any nicks on the seal lip lead to direct leaks. Before finally inserting the rod, generously lubricate the gland and seals with clean hydraulic oil.
