Workshop Technical Tip: Before fitting the new swing drive gearbox, inspect the condition of the slewing ring gear teeth — worn or chipped ring gear teeth will rapidly destroy the new gearbox. Drain the old oil from the gearbox and fill with fresh gear oil to the correct specification — running dry or with degraded oil is the most common cause of premature planetary gear failure. When replacing the gearbox, simultaneously inspect the condition of the hydraulic swing motor — a worn motor transmitting vibration and overloads will shorten the service life of the new gearbox. After installation, perform several slow, unloaded slews and check for unusual noise and oil leaks before returning the machine to full operation.
